STUDENT PROFILE

Angelica Guerrero carefully sorted through many university course catalogs and master’s degree offerings before selecting Spertus to pursue a Master of Science in Nonprofit Management (MSNM).  She is now in her second year of the two-year degree.

“This was the only program that was affordable, convenient, and had a focus in fundraising,” she says.

Guerrero was already working in the institutional advancement department of Roosevelt University when she started looking at degree programs.  She wanted to expand her background on the different aspects of fundraising to broaden her career options.  “I want to develop cultivation and stewardship knowledge and build skills on government grants,” she says.

Guerrero had tried taking a few online courses, but found the lack of interaction with other students and the heavy emphasis on writing left her cold.  She likes the cohort model that Spertus provides, offering discussions with other students in the field.  Her cohort has become very close, sharing potluck meals before their evening classes.

“This degree is going to let me move up in the nonprofit sector, not only in fundraising,” says Guerrero.  “It will allow me to manage a fundraising department or be an executive director of a nonprofit organization.” #
