Maxwell Street Market, the bustling open-air bazaar located at the heart of the heavily immigrant Near West Side, was a favorite subject of artists. Todros Geller’s 1925 woodcut shows the activity of the stalls, where men in bowler hats and women in shawls procure fresh meats, sausage, herring, and kosher baked goods.
