Graduation Address

Onie L. Riley attended Simeon Career Academy and the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, where she earned a BA in African-American Studies. Like today’s graduates, she earned her MS in Nonprofit Management from Spertus Institute. In 2013, Ms. Riley joined the Illinois African-American Family Commission as the Public Policy and Research Specialist, helping to draft state and federal legislation. A year later, she became the Director of Operations at the Commission, managing grant programs that fund startups and small businesses. She also serves on the board of UCAN and is the board chair of Sankofa Safe Child Initiative.

Ms. Riley has presented about leadership development and economic empowerment at over 30 national conferences. Her success has inspired her to become an agent for social change by advocating for young people, helping donors understand their social responsibility, and using her own story to motivate others to rise above life’s challenges.
