The Dean of Chicago Jewish Artists
Todros Geller & the Chicago Context
This program took place at:
North Suburban Synagogue Beth El
1175 Sheridan Road, Highland Park
Artist Todros Geller worked in a range of media and pursued subjects and styles that crossed boundaries. He also straddled the secular and religious worlds, using his art, like many others during the early 20th century, to bring social issues to the attention of his viewers. Susan Weininger shared her expertise on Geller in the context of art in Chicago in the period of the 1920s-1940s, assessing his versatility and influence.
This program took place in conjunction with a display of woodcut prints by Todros Geller, on display at North Shore Synagogue Beth El in conjunction with the Spertus exhibit Uncovered & Rediscovered: Stories of Jewish Chicago.
Susan Weininger is Professor Emerita of Art History at Roosevelt University. She has curated exhibits and written on Chicago artists and modernist Chicago art in general. She serves on the boards of the Illinois Chapter for the National Museum of Women in the Arts and the Midwest New Deal Preservation Association, and is a vice president of Anshe Emet Synagogue.
