About the Highland Park Shooting

Dear Friends:

I was stunned and saddened to learn of the senseless violence against innocent parade viewers and participants yesterday in Highland Park. This attack targeted individuals, our democratic society being celebrated, and the very fabric of our communities.

On behalf of everyone at Spertus Institute, I extend condolences to the families who lost loved ones, to those who were injured and will hopefully make full and complete recoveries, and to everyone who suffered through this event and will relive aspects of it for many years to come.

At the same time, I have heard from many people about remarkable acts of bravery and selflessness, about caring for others, and a true spirit of loving one's neighbor. While it is impossible take away the loss and pain of the day, it is my profound hope that the narrative of those experiences and actions will also be remembered and serve as the basis for how we understand and rebuild from the horrific events of July 4, 2022.

With hopes for healing and blessings for peace,

db
