What the bubonic plague can teach us about our current times under COVID-19 pandemic?

On April 3, 2020, historian and Spertus Institute President and CEO Dr. Dean P. Bell was interviewed by Ji Suk Yi on responses to COVID 19.

The interview focused on how past pandemics can help us contextualize what we are going through today, including where we might find some hope in lessons from the past. 


Dr. Dean P. Bell is the ninth President and CEO of Spertus Institute for Jewish Learning and Leadership, where he holds a faculty appointment as Professor of History. He is a widely published author whose current research focuses on early modern cultural responses to plague and disaster, as well as vulnerability, resilience and religious leadership. His most recent book is Plague in the Early Modern World: A Documentary History.

Ji Suk Yi hosts a weekday evening program on WGN Radio. She was a daily contributing host on ABC7 Chicago’s Windy City LIVE for seven seasons and has been a feature writer for the Chicago Sun-Times. Ji attended Salem College and received her law degree at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. She’s called Chicago home since 2006.
