In conjunction with Inquiry 01: Chicago Jewish Artists Fellowship Exhibition, Spertus Institute hosts The Murmur of Democracya monthly group performance organized by artist Matthew Girson. During each performance audience members reflect on the successes and failures of Democracy by reading and listening — to and for each other. Chosen texts are poems, letters, testimonies, and speeches of survivors of hatred, bigotry, sexism and other forms of oppression. Many of these texts are catalogued in the archive of the januarytwenty.net website.

The site is named after a meeting on January 20, 1942, when 15 high-ranking Nazi officials met in Wannsee, a suburb of Berlin, to plan and implement the "Final Solution" to what they termed the "Jewish Question." This was the day that the systematic annihilation of Europe’s Jews was organized and made official as state policy. Commemorating this historical event provides an opportunity to stand together in our ongoing fight against hatred, bigotry, oppression, and violence.

The Fellowship program is co-directed by Spertus Institute’s Curator of Collections and Exhibitions Ionit Behar and curator, writer, and educator Ruslana Lichtzier. The artists — who work in media including film, photography, performance, drawing, painting, and sculpture — have had opportunities to learn from leading scholars, visit artists’ studios, and work closely with objects from Spertus Institute's collections and archives.
