Since the birth of the State of Israel, Jewish and Democratic values have served as its foundation.

Affirmed by Israel’s Basic Laws, these guiding principles are at the heart of Israeli governance and society.

In a three-part mini-course, Israel expert Dr. Keren Fraiman addresses important questions about how these two separate ideals have co-existed through Israel's history and how they function in Israel today. Come away with a more nuanced understanding of how Jewish and Democratic values are expressed in Israeli society, how they interact, and the relationship between them.

Dr. Keren E. Fraiman is Spertus Institute’s recently appointed Dean and Chief Academic Officer. She comes to Spertus from the iCenter for Israel Education, where she has been serving as Director of Research and Evaluation and she continues to serve on the faculty of their Master's Concentration in Israel Education.;

An accomplished educator, she received her PhD in International Relations and Security Studies from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and her BA in Political Science and Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations from the University of Chicago. She was a Schusterman Israel Scholar, has worked at the Crown Center for Middle East Studies at Brandeis, led multiple Birthright Israel trips, and served as an officer in the IDF.

This is the annual Horwitz Family Presentation on Jewish History, generously endowed by the Horwitz Charitable Fund.
